Dr. Kathleen Van Bentham
Advanced Cognitive Engineering Laboratory, Sr. Research Scientist

Kathleen Van Benthem, PhD, is an Adjunct Research Professor in Cognitive Science at Carleton University and a senior researcher in the Advanced Cognitive Engineering (ACE) Lab. Her research focuses on aviation human factors and pilot cognitive safety, with particular emphasis on the development and validation of the CANFLY cognitive fitness assessment for pilots. Using flight simulation, computerized cognitive testing, EEG, eye tracking, and advanced analytics, her work examines how factors such as workload and aging influence pilot vigilance and decision-making. In her research, Dr. Van Benthem highlights prospective memory as an early indicator of cognitive vulnerability—often a “canary in the coal mine” for emerging safety risk in single-pilot and small-crew operations. Her research on the CANFLY can be applied by regulators, operators, and pilots to support proactive, evidence-based approaches to pilot assessment and flight safety.
